For the second edition of Selected Sounds, take a moment to learn about Scott Hansen: Tycho & Jakub Alexander: Heathered Pearls. Two artists from Ghostly International, a record label and art company that provides works of high quality, integrity, and individuality. DJ’ing for Ghostly seems to only scratch the surface of Jakub’s career as he is the Distribution Director for the label as well, Curator and Manager for iso50, Owner of Moodgadget Records and has signed artists such as Tycho, Com Truise, Shigeto, and Beacon; portraying a varied skill set in many fields. Scott is a California based musician (Tycho) and artist (iso50). He created iso50 as a platform for his portfolio but over the years it has evolved to become a shop, clothing line, and blog. Take a moment to read an interview with Jakub and listen to the mix they put together for Selected Sounds…
1. How do you find the music you listen to?
Oh man, my daytime job for the last 6 years has been putting together multiple playlists a week of artists I find and posting them on the ISO50 blog Scott and I run. I usually dig through Soundcloud in the morning, I like to check whats doing well in certain genres on bandcamp, I check the usual pfork-xlr8r-stereogum-GvsB etc and then dig through my hype machine list, check the noteworthy releases on Beatport and iTunes Electronic and a few message forums for upcoming releases, I guess thats my morning routine which might be hard to digest for some people but its a pretty fluid streamline ritual I enjoy.
2. What is your favourite way to enjoy music?
Seeing a musician/band/dj at a small venue(150-300 capacity) with good sound, I also enjoy an empty record shop where you have time to go through all the vinyl you selected. I used to enjoy car rides but in New York if you’re in a car and the drive is hectic I only enjoy talk radio but once you hit the highway or some nature then listening to an album all the way through becomes the best.
3. What excites you about finding new music?
That hunt for the feeling a song gives me when I want to hear it again, you don’t even let the end happen and before you know it you’re pressing rewind. I also naturally love sharing something new and showing people how much music is changing and the options people have. I hate thinking about a person frustrated and not being able to find anything they want to hear.
4. What tracks/and or artists comprise your personal soundtrack right now?
There is a new signing to Ghostly that toured with Tycho called Beacon that Scott and I enjoyed each night. I track down a lot of the Todd Terje and The Revenge edits, I love knowing whats going on in Berlin with a lot of the hypnotic faster real techno, I recently signed an EP by Markus Guentner which will be coming out on my label Moodgadget that I can’t stop listening too. I do like to peek in and see what the hip hop world is doing, right now a lot of producers are using some fascinating loops for atmosphere.
5. Who do you trust to give an honest evaluation of new tracks?
That’s a hard one, everyone always seems soo nice, friends or strangers, I guess my one subconscious that allows a song to be finished and to be able to move on.
